Senior Club Championship
Senior Club Championship (The Pewter Mug)
Mens Senior Championships
The Men’s Senior Championship is the pre-eminent event at Tai Tapu Golf. The very first winner of the championship (and twice more thereafter) was also the first Club Captain, J Bain. Fittingly, the Club’s first President, W G Macartney was Senior Champion (1938). He returned after World War II to win again in 1949.
As may be seen in the table below, the most prolific were the Sisson brothers, Roger (five times winner in the 1970s) and Adrian having four wins. Father and son winners were Daniel Cusiel with four wins, 1999, 2002, 2011 and 2013, and his younger son Michael, winner in 2006 and 2009. Gavin Titmus had a remarkable sequence of four consecutive wins during 1967-1970.
Ken Noh, who held the then course record of 67 as a 15 year old, won this event in millennium year, 2000. The Club’s course record holder in 2013, Daniel Hobbs won this event in 2012.
Whilst in their employment at the Club, two previous greenkeepers, viz., Gerald Ware (1963) and Neil Scriggins (1998) have won the event. Wayne Clark who served for a time as an Assistant Greenkeeper also had a win in this event (in 2004).
The winner of the Men’s Senior Club Championship does not receive the traditional cup but, unusually, a fine lidded pewter tankard engraved “Tai Tapu Championship” instead. It originated from Walker & Hall, Sheffield, England in the 1930s.

Mens Intermediate Championships & Plates
The Men’s Intermediate Cup has been competed for since 1952 when it was won by H B Anderson. Coincidentally, Anderson donated to the Club the Men’s Junior Championship Cup.
Patrick Fitzgibbon has the honour of having the most wins in this event–four. (He also won the Senior Championship in 2009.) As may be seen in the table below, there are several dual winners of this event but apart from Patrick, no-one else has claimed this Cup as “his own”.

Junior A and B Club Championship
Junior A and B Club Championship
Some uncertainties arise when attempting to record the Men’s Junior A Championship winners. Until these are resolved, the Junior, Junior A and Junior B are presented together.
In 2013, the Club has in its possession four cups for men’s competitions in the Junior Championships categories. They are the Anderson Cup (engraved for the Club’s Junior Championship), the Jones Cup (engraved for the Club’s Junior A Championship), the Brian Davidson Cup (also engraved for the Club’s Junior A Championship, and the Tai Tapu Golf Club Cup (engraved for Junior B Championships). All are pictured above in this order.
These Cups were acquired in the order stated. The first, the Anderson Cup, was first played for in 1949 when, as engraved on the cup, it was won by I C Gray. For the following two seasons W D Robinson was Junior Champion.
In 1957 the Jones Cup for Junior A Championship made an appearance with G R Day as the first winner. The Jones Cup continued in use until 1975 when the last name engraved on it was A B Hight.
However, during the period the Jones Cup was in use ostensibly for Junior A Championships, the original Anderson Cup was also in use and none of the names engraved thereon matched any one of the Jones Cup’s names for that period. The implication might be that a decision had been made about 1957 to split Junior into Junior A and Junior B. Because the Jones Cup specified that is was for Junior A competition, that could have meant that the Anderson cup, from 1957 was for Junior B competition, but there is no other evidence to support that view.
Hearsay information at Tai Tapu golf has suggested that the Jones Cup went astray at some time. If it did, then presumably it was after Hight won it in 1975. Notwithstanding that issue, the Brian Davidson Cup (which is of a fine attractive appearance) has since become the official Junior A Championship Cup. It appears that winners names on it were backdated to 1972 although the cup itself was donated about 2003. Oddly, the Anderson Cup (which it is recalled was for simply Junior Championship, not Junior A championship) continued to be engraved with the same winners names (albeit a couple of uncertainties) as were being placed on the Brian Davidson Cup, i.e. a duplication.
Also in 1975, the Tai Tapu Junior B Championship Cup was put into competition. It has continued so right up to the present.
To assist somewhat in clarification of the situation, the table below shows also the names of the winners as posted on the Honours Boards. It is noted that the Honours Board hosting the Junior Championship was in place before the split into Junior A and Junior B.

Champion of Champions
Champion of Champions
To have a Champion of Champions trophy is not uncommon in golf clubs. The trophy pictured here is quite handsome and would grace any member’s trophy shelf. It was donated by former Club Secretary William Weatherhead.
The match format is knock-out Match Play on Handicap. Disappointingly, it has not often been played for at Tai Tapu. Part of the problem is that by the time the championships have been completed there are not many opportunities to complete this event before the end of the season.

The Otahuna Cup is one of the oldest trophies at the Club still extant. This handsome Cup itself does not have the common chromium-plating but is silver-plated as certified by hallmarks engraved on it. It was presented to the Club by Sir Heaton Rhodes himself in 1935 and first played for in 1936.
The first winner, M Mackenzie won it in both 1936 and 1937. The table below shows that the Cup has been won by a wide range of members, but only one member, Bruce McKendry has managed to make it “his own” with five wins. (He was summarily ejected from the 2007 event in the first round, but then recovered well to win the John Hartnell Cup).
Patrick Fitzgibbon with four wins is the best of the remaining winners followed by Maurice Burke and Murray Hatchard each with three wins.A number of others have been dual winners, notable the Club’s first President William Grieg Macartney, and Stuart Berryman in 2013 & 2014. Surprisingly, Danny Cusiel who has been the Club Champion on several occasions and remains in 2013 as still amongst the top few players at the Club, has won it only once. The plate event for first round losers also carries a trophy, viz., the John Hartnell Cup.
After a Stroke Net round to obtain 32 qualifiers, the contest for the Cup is matchplay on handicap

The John Hartnell Cup
To act as a plate event to complement the Otahuna Cup, a second handsome trophy was played for in 2006. It was named in honour of Honorary Life Member John Hartnell who successively held the offices of a Club Committee member, Club Captain, President and Patron. The John Hartnell Cup is the plate event for those losing in the first round of the Otahuna Cup competition, this was changed in 2019 when the plate round was scrapped and the runner up to the Otahuna Cup bacame the recipient of the John Hartnell Cup, It has been possible to insert Mugshots of all winners of the John Hartnell Cup from 2006 through 2014.
A more prosaic account of the origin of this trophy comes from the 27 April 2005 Report of Match Committee submitted by the then Club Captain, John McCabe: “The match committee will introduce a flights section for this event next year as part of our efforts to expose players to more matchplay events. A new trophy will be bought by the Club Captain. The new trophy will be called the John Hartnell Cup.”

Waitaha Cup and Rex Rudkin Salver
Waitaha Cup and Rex Rudkin Salver
Apart from the Championships cups, the three most significant Club trophies are the Otahuna Cup, the Waitaha Cup and the Suckling Cup. They are of long-standing. The Waitaha Cup format is a knockout four ball best ball net after a qualifying round. That format gives the opportunity for some of the “more average” players in the Club to have the pleasure of partaking in a trophy with some hope of success.
The Waitaha Cup was presented to the Club by the famous W G Macartney, the first President in 1949— but he never won it himself! The most successful winning combination has been Donald McLean and Jack Gleeson who were on the right side of “shake hands time” in 1973, 1974, 1976 and later, in 1982. That’s a fine record, almost as though they were specialising in the event. Two father/son combinations were succesful–Kevin Rennell with his son Ramon in 1994 and Daniel Cusiel and his elder son John in 1999. Daniel partnered in 2015 with Club Administrator Stephen Piper to take a narrow win, Stephen coming to light with a longish critical putt on the first play-off hole to take the win from Runners-Up Wiremu Pahau and Alasdair Graham.

Rex Rudkin Salver
The Rex Rudin Salver is the prize for the winner of the Plate event for Waitaha Cup competition. The Plate is contested by those pairs exiting after the first round of the Cup. The Salver is quite attractive and in some ways it could be argued that it would have been better had it been awarded to the beaten finalists in the Waitaha Cup itself. Winning a Plate event in any sport (often called a “consolation event”) is not usually regarded as particularly meritorious. However, many fine players have found themselves in the Rex Rudkin event after an indifferent first round in the Waitaha and so there have been many fiercely contested and high standard finals in this event as well as in the Waitaha. No minor prize would therefore suffice, this was changed in 2019 when the plate round was scrapped and the runners up to the Waitaha Cup became the recipients of the Rex Rudkin Salver.
As with the Waitaha Cup itself there is wide range of winning pairs for the Rex Rudkin Salver. However, Daniel Cusiel has accumulated four wins, two with his younger son Michael in successive seasons 2006 & 2007 and two with Bruce McAlister in 1989 and 1991. The latter has had five wins, his second two were with Reginald Kinzett in 2000, & 2005. In 2015, Club President Neville Turner with the steady Terence Revitt as a partner had a comfortable win over Runners-Up Joel Setterington and John Knowles.

Junior Boys Championship Cup
Junior Boys Championship Cup
Although many girls and boys show an initial interest in playing golf at Tai Tapu, very few persist beyond the beginner level.
Of those who do and become reasonable players fewer still remain at the Club. It will be apparent from the table below that there have been many occasions when there have been few or no juniors to compete for the cup.
Also, it is regretted that there are only four photographs of the winners of the Junior Boys Championship Cup.
Of these, Michael Cusiel, as with his father Daniel and brother John, became an excellent golfer and a credit to his family.
Michael has twice won the Club’s Senior Championship (2006, 2009). Daniel Laughton developed into a fine golfer but has preferred other Clubs for his membership. The only youthful photo we have is of Alister Fiecken who became a well-respected and rominent member at the Club.
Alister has made valued contributions to the administration of the Club. He was Vice President in 2014, and in the usual course of events he would be expected to succeed to President in due course.

Monthly Mug
Monthly Mug
The Men’s Monthly Mug competition is of such long standing—at least 38 years–that it has become a tradition. Each month there is scheduled a Stroke Net game for which the prize is the Mug. It is invariably keenly contested and the winner receives an acclamation as though he had won a major trophy event–indeed it is virtually such. The winner receives a free beer from the bar in a Mug dedicated to the purpose. There is a protocol associated with it. In its purest form, the Mug winner is permitted to extend the empty Mug to any of the Saturday men competitors and have it filled and paid for by them for the Mug winner’s consumption at any Saturday during the month. There have been variations in the protocol, mainly to place reasonable limits on whom may so be requested and how often the Mug may be refilled, but that is its essence. The Mug itself came into existence in 1975 when a prominent member, William (Bill) J McNally, presented a pewter mug for the competition.
In the 1975 programme booklet the match on Saturday 8 March reads: “Stroke. W McNally, Pewter Mug, Trophy.” It is possible that by donating an actual Mug, Bill McNally was formalising a practice already in existence, if not officially recognised. (It seems more or less to be copying the basics of the Ladies Golf Union (LGU Medal competitions).
Unfortunately, as Bill McNally himself reported at the Club committee’s meeting March 1987, the original Mug had been lost. Whether an interim replacement had been made is unknown. The present Mug is of stainless steel and has a wooden handle. It has ” The Bill Mac Mug” inscribed on a piece of pewter stuck to the side. In a couple of seasons Mug winners have been given to keep a normal glass mug already engraved with the event name and month and year, but not the winner’s name.
Unfortunately the records of the winners in the programme books go back only to the 2002 season. And that is all that can be listed below. During the 2013 season, 2013, David Stalker won the Mug in successive months and that was speculated as being unique. But later in 2013, Bob Magrs (pronounced “maars”) won in successive months October and November. In the 2014 season, Tai Tapu Golf’s greenkeeper, James Lee won the Mug in both October and November. Not only that, but he presented the 2014 season’s Best Mug score of 59 Net. David Adam won the Mug three times 2006; first-up to open the season and then later in consecutive months September and October 2006. The late Warren Meechin in 2002 won the Mug in the three consecutive months August, September, October. Indeed over the period 2002-2013, Meechin won it 8 times altogether. And he passed away a few years back so competed for only a part of the seasons for which there are records. Next nearest were Johnny Knowles (6 wins by mid 2014) and then David Cate and Wayne Clark, each a 5 times monthly winner.
The Late Warren Meechin, highly successful in the Men’s Monthly Mug competitions.
Johnny Knowles–With his latest win on the 8th June 2014 Johnny has won the Mug Six times!

Sheldon Cup
Sheldon Cup
Geoffrey N Sheldon presented his Cup in 1949. It was inscribed “Tai Tapu G. C. Spissitudine”
The match format is best three of five rounds Stroke Net. The term “spissitudine” is somewhat obscure. It appears from a Latin-English online dictionary to be related to “spissitudo”. And for that, terms such as “density”, “thickness”, “consistency” have been stated. Because the winner of this Cup needs to have some consistency during the five rounds then perhaps it was this latter meaning which Sheldon intended. Unfortunately we shall never be sure about that because Geoff, who was a country farm agent for AMP and retired in about 1966, passed away in 1988.
Around 2013 or so, the five rounds of the Sheldon Cup are played in conjunction with the scheduled men’s monthly Mug Days.

Tri Series
Tri Series
The Men’s Tri Series is a handsome striking figure on a pedastal attributing the donors Oceans Gems, Shell Riccarton Road, R A Hale Ltd, Joiners. Ocean Gems is owned and operated by a former Tai Tapu Golf Club Captain, John McCabe. John McCabe is remembered at the Club as a strong proponent of the work that produced the current fine balcony structure. R A Hale Ltd’s part owner Stephen Piper was Vice President of Tai Tapu Golf and later resigned from that position to be appointed the Club’s “Administrator”. Effectively that position was equivalent to House Manager. In 2014 he was adjudged Canterbury Golf Association’s Administrator of the Year. Stephen has in 2016 won the trophy with partner Barry Stephens, and they won it with a record margin. The event is played over three rounds of different formats. In 2012 they were Greensome Stroke Net, 4 BBB stroke net, and 4 BBB Stableford net. The first winners of the event were Peter Laurenson and Stuart Carline. Peter was only a medium handicapper but he possessed a tremendously long drive off the tee. Stuart was amongst the best golfers in the Club but it was Peter’s drive that made all the difference at the time. Stuart who was a regular volunteer for works at the Club resigned to go to Western Australia in 2012, but happily for the Club was back in the latter part of 2013. Already there have been dual winners in this event as shown in the table following.

Gleeson Trophy
Gleeson Trophy
The match for the J R Gleeson Trophy is currently an eighteen hole combined Stableford with Senior/Junior drawn pairs. It was always a drawn pairs game irrespective of handicap and in the past it may have been played as either a 27-hole or a 36 hole match. There might also have been a “Calcutta” book made up for the results. More recently it was changed so that pairs were drawn one from a pot of the lower handicap players and the other from a pot of higher handicap players. Confusion attended when by mistake the draw was made after the match instead of before. J R Gleeson was one of the very first winning pair for his own trophy in 1974. He went on to win it twice more. However, it was the redoubtable Kevin Rennell, whose wins tallied four, who dominated this trophy. Don McLean and the late Angus Welsh returned three wins each.

Harris Mugs – Longest Drive – Men’s and Women’s
Harris Mugs – Longest Drive – Men’s and Women’s
The pair of pewter mugs donated by Harris as early in the Club’s history as 1937 have experienced very different fates. The Ladies mug has been played for and, except for a period in the 1960s a winner recorded nearly all the years since,. The Men’s mug had no winners recorded until 1940. And after that, Frederick Williamson (a fine surname is Williamson!) won in 1940. Then winners were recorded erratically up till the early 1970s. That does not say a great deal for the men’s administrators in that long period. After that the Mug disappeared altogether and everyone forgot all about it.
However, when a former member who had actually had the mug in his possession for years discovered it in 2012 when moving his household to Auckland. The mug was returned to the Club (a bit the worse for neglect) and played for again in 2012. The event was open to any member who wished to try his luck. Each participant was allowed three drives and his longest was taken for the competition. Of course only those drives which finished in the fairway qualified.

Dr. Neal Cup
Dr. Neal Cup
The cup, donated by Dr Neal for competition amongst the Tai Tapu men, is for the “most improved player” of the season. Generally. “most improved” is taken to be the player with the greatest reduction in his handicap from beginning to end of season.
Unfortunately, since 2012 or earlier, the whereabouts of the cup is unknown and a transcription of the winners names on it cannot be verified. The names of the winners given below for the period 1994-2012 , were taken from listings in the programme booklets. The cup was not presented to the winners from 2007 to 2012.
The first mention of this trophy is in the Club’s 1995 programme booklet. In that programme booklet, under the list of trophies, is the Dr Neal Cup which is “for the player with the largest handicap reduction in the 20-30 handicap grade.”
It appeared like that in the programme booklets 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999.
However, in the 2000 programme booklet, and all booklets since, the 20-30 handicap grade range requirement has been omitted. That change may have been decided upon by the Club Committee or the Match Committee around 2000, and there may have been good reason to change an original condition that was imposed by the cup’s donor, Dr Neal. Minutes of 1999 or 2000 meetings of the Match committee or the Club committee which may have an item about this cup, are currently unavailable. However, the change has allowed some players to be awarded it who otherwise would not have qualified –e.g. Daniel Laughton 2005, Michael Hoffman, 2007, and even Liam Brewer in his second win 2012.

The Patricia and Kevin Rennell Shootout Cups
The Patricia and Kevin Rennell Shootout Cups
Kevin carried out a great deal of work assisting the greenkeeper and is remembered for designing and constructing the challenging #8 green. Kevin is on record of having had three holes-in-one; Patricia had one. Kevin and Patricia were a formidable pair in mixed pairs competitions, having won quite a number of trophy events. Patricia was Ladies Club Champion on eight occasions. Kevin’s name will be found on the important men’s trophies, the Intermediate Championship Cup, the Otahuna Cup and the Waitaha Cup.
Unfortunately, Kevin Rennell did not play in scheduled matches at Tai Tapu after 2009, while Patricia’s last match at Tai Tapu was believed to have been in February 2011. Kevin and Patricia Rennell between them have held nearly all the offices in the Club available to members. Patricia was Club Vice President in 1992, then President, 1993-1996 inclusive. Kevin was Club Captain 1981-1982, President in 1984-1985, Club Treasurer 1990-1992, Club Secretary 1992-1993, and on the Main Committee 1994. He also served on the committee of the Wednesday Group. They were both elected as Honorary Life Members for their fine services to the Club over many years.
The Men’s Shoot-out Cups, donated by Kevin Rennell, are competed for in the four basic grades–Senior, Intermediate, Junior A and Junior B. The Rennell Shootout is one of the most interesting in the Men’s competitions and is looked forward to most pleasurably each season. Ladies Shootout event was initiated in 2008 when it was sponsored by the Tai Tapu Vineyard, Bentwood Wines. That event is remembered with much appreciation because of a most generous donation of its product by proprietor Ray Watson. In the following season the Ladies competed for a permanent trophy in the form of nicely proportioned cup donated by Honorary Life Member Patricia Rennell.
For the Kevin Rennell Men’s Shootout, a qualifying stroke (Gross) round of 18 holes is played in the morning. The top ten players in each of the Senior, Intermediate, Junior A and Junior B grades then shoot-out during a refereed afternoon round which is over 9 holes. A referee is necessary to accompany the players to record the scores of each player on each hole and to determine the order of play. After each hole the player with the highest score is eliminated. On any hole, if two or more players have the highest scores, the referee calls for a putt-out or chip-out. He designates a spot either on the green, or just off the green, even in a green-side bunker, and the players have one stroke each to get nearest the flag. The player whose ball is furthest from the flag is eliminated. Thus eventually two players are left to contest the last hole which of course is the ninth played.
For the Ladies Shootout, a series of three qualifying stroke rounds are held during the season. The top ten players from these play in the Shootout later in the season.

Men’s Ringers
Men’s Ringers
The N G Fowler Cup was donated in 1980 for the Men’s Net Ringers competition and the names of winners listed below have been taken from those on the cup. There is no trophy for the Gross Ringers and the only records we have for that competition are from the Club’s Programme Booklets. In these, results of competitions have been recorded only from 1994 which were therefore published in the 1995 booklet.
Few golfers will be unaware of what Ringers are. But to refresh the memory, a Ringers score is simply the sum of a player’s best score on each hole of the course over a specified period of time, usually the golf season. There are Net and Gross versions of Ringers.
But what about the name itself? Originally the Handicapper, or other Club Official designated as the keeper of the Ringers Records, required any player who thought his score on a particular hole could well be his best on that hole to date, to place a ring around that score/hole on his scorecard. Then when the cards were being processed the Ringers records would be checked and updated accordingly.
Normally, Ringers are recorded only on Stroke rounds although there is no logical reason why they could not be counted also on Stableford rounds because any time a player picks-up it will be because he could not score any Stableford points on a particular hole and therefore wouldn’t have a Ringer score on that hole anyway. Until 2013, the Ringers counted on all Stroke rounds at Tai Tapu. From then, Ringers have counted only on Mug Days, i.e. monthly. That provides fewer opportunities for high handicappers to have the Par, or even the occasional lucky Birdie, which they need to lower their Ringers score. Not only that, but the course on Mug Days is set up with all tee markers set for Medal standard so that high handicappers may need an extra stroke to reach the greens. The reasons given for the Ringers to be counted only on Mug Days have been unclear–it certainly requires less work on the part of whomever keeps the Ringers records, but that should never be a good reason to change a traditional practice.
As to the Gross Ringers competitions, it is obvious that only the best players in the Club have any possibility of winning. For the last decade that has been the case: Patrick Fitzgibbon, Wayne Clark, Daniel Cusiel, Daniel Hobbs and Stuart Berryman, all Senior Champions of recent years were the Gross Winners. The same pattern is observed if one cares to look at the results for earlier years.
As to the Net Ringers, the opposite would be expected to apply, and indeed it has. With respect, one notes that veterans Mervyn Watt, Reginald Kinzett have in the last decade or so become high handicappers and until the recent change to Ringers being counted only on Mug Days, they and similar others have dominated Net Ringers. The sole exception appeared to be the win of Brian Davidson in 2008. Although Brian was not in the top half dozen players in the Club he was far from being a high handicapper.
In summary, a Net Ringers Competition is biased towards double-bogey handicappers while the Gross Ringers Competition is biased towards Scratch Golfers. Middle handicappers have limited opportunities in this sort of competition.

An Historical Snippet:
We know that in the sports’ idiom there is yet another meaning for “Ringer”. There it is used to refer to an impostor, especially one whose pretence is intended to gain an advantage in a competition. Most commonly it is substituting a very similar appearing but faster horse fraudulently for a slower horse.
It also means to recruit a person of much superior prowess into a competition where a lower standard generally would apply. Michael Bohn in Money Golf-Six Hundred Years of Betting on Birdies cites the case of James the future King James IV of Scotland who in 1681 arranged a fours golf match to “resolve” an issue of the origins of golf. Bohn states that James chose a local shoemaker and quite worthy golfer, John Paterson, as a Ringer to be his partner and they duly won—unfairly, because the opposition was no better than James himself. There was a heavy wager on the event and Paterson was enabled to build a fashionable house in Edinburgh with his share
Holes-in-One at Tai Tapu Golf
Holes-in-One at Tai Tapu Golf
Tai Tapu Golf possesses a handsome trophy on which the names of those (skillful + lucky) players who have scored holes-in-one at Tai Tapu Golf are inscribed. This trophy may have been that which was presented to the Club in November 1977 by Mr W G Eastlake, but we are not quite sure. Can someone please advise?. It could be somewhat uncertain whether the names of all those who have scores holes-in-one have actually been inscribed on the trophy and the tabulated names below may not be complete.
The 50th Jubilee booklet records the very first Hole-in-One at Tai Tapu as being in August or September 1934, and “who more appropriate to achieve it but the President, Mr W G McCartney”
In 1952, after extensive changes to the golf course after World War 2, W D Robinson was the first to have a hole-in-one. He achieved that 29 June 1952 on Ahuriri, then listed as Hole #12. F Creighton, a member of a winning Patterson Cup team in 1961, asserted that he too had had a Hole-in-One in or about that year.
The extraordinary story of Stan Ogg and his marvellous Hole-in-One mentioned in the 50th Jubilee booklet and by Brian Briggs in “Golf’s you had better believe it” is worth repeating—indeed it will never be forgotten! On Jimmy’s Track, Stan struck a wood off the tee and the ball’s flight took a wicked curve heading for out-of-bounds imperiling the traffic down the adjacent highway. However the ball struck a roadside telegraph pole and was deflected onto the green whence it rolled into the cup for the Ace!
The Club’s Rules are quite specific as to which Holes-in-One actually count as “official”. That is the event must be in a carded game which means in an official organised game. Thus those good players who whilst having a casual game with friends and able markers of their scorecards cannot claim an official Hole-in-One. Well-known Tai Tapu member Joel Setterington is one such unfortunate.
The Tai Tapu Summertime Classic event inaugurated in 2005 has each year carried a substantial prize for a Hole-in-One, usually on Jimmy’s Track. Unfortunately for Victor Simpson formerly Canterbury and All Black rugby player, who was one of the winning men’s pair in 2006, who scored a Hole-in-One on Jimmy’s Track, the prize that year—an attractive car offered by Popular Cars, Christchurch—applied only for a Hole-in-One on Ahuriri!
The vicissitudes of cruel fate descended upon poor Mildred Silvester on 20 April 1993. Mildred put her tee shot on Willow (par 3) out of bounds by the tennis courts. She then had another tee shot and holed it—but she only got a par for that, not a Hole-in-One!
The most memorable moment in any golfer’s experience is the thrill of seeing a well-hit tee shot pitch on the green and roll up and into the hole. (Maybe there should be a record kept of all golfers whose ball stopped within one roll of the cup. They could then have annual reunions and all sob bitterly together in harmony at what very nearly happened!).
Most golfers never achieve the feat of a Hole-in-One but, as seen below, past Ladies Captain, Alison Whitelaw, Life Member, Kevin Rennell, past Club Captain George Engebretsen, Jack Lang, late Life Member, Murray Griffiths, and past member Bryan Kerr, each accumulated three holes-in-one. But surpassing even those remarkable records is that of Graham Stowell who enjoyed teeing-off for four holes-in-one. (Unfortunately we do not have a picture of Graham). But we do have a picture of Te Maunga “Macca” Renata receiving from Club Captain Rod Frewen his mounted ball from his Hole-in-One in 2015. That followed another hole-in-one in 2014.

Tai Tapu 27-Hole Men’s Open
Tai Tapu 27-Hole Men’s Open
he first Men’s Open tournament run by the Club was in 1939. As reported in the Ellesmere Guardian of 5 March 1940, Tai Tapu Golf was “indebted to Mr B G Dalgety for kindly donating a handsome challenge cup to be held by the winner of this event. Last season’s winner was Mr F Williamson of the Templeton Club”. The cup is a double-handed trophy cup, itself 25 cm high (or 32 cm with base), made in Sterling, England in 1938. It was revalued in 2012 at $1400. Although it is stated as a Challenge Cup, no mode of challenge has ever applied and the Cup has been played for as part of the Tai Tapu Men’s Open tournament on each occasion that tournament has been held.
A second trophy dating back also to 1939 is also played for in the Tai Tapu Men’s Open. It is the J H McKenzie Tray which is a Silver-plated tray (EPNS, Walker & Hall, England) and is of dimensions 45 x 25cm. It is engraved “Junior Open Championship”.
From 1954, a third trophy, the Carter Salver, was added to the Tai Tapu Men’s Open trophies. It is silver-plated-on-copper having an engraved pattern and with ornate edging. It is engraved “Carter Trophy Open Intermediate Championship”. It has a diameter of 29 cm.
In summary, the Trophies and Prizes currently awarded c2016 for the Tai Tapu Men’s Open are:
Overall Best Gross (B G Dalgety Cup)
Overall Best Net
Senior Best Gross
Senior Best Net
Intermediate Best Gross (Carter Salver)
Intermediate Best Net
Junior Best Gross (J H McKenzie Tray)
Junior Best Net
In awarding prizes, the current policy is that if a player has won one prize he cannot receive another of those listed. E.g. If a Junior player produces the Overall Best Net on his card, he will be awarded the prize for overall best net, but not the J H McKenzie Tray for the Junior Best Net; et seq. This does not apply to any supplemenraty competitions such as closest to the Flag or Longest Putt or anything else added to make the day enjoyable. We are unaware of what prizes and categories that applied in the further past of the Club.
The first winner of the Dalgety Cup was Frederick Williamson (and a mighty fine name for a golfer is “Williamson”). Frederick won it again the following year and yet again 12 years later in 1952. R T Lambie won it in 1941, 1948 and 1951 to be another triple winner as was A R Sisson in 1979, 1982,1987. However those records were surpassed by K D Foxton in a great four season burst of form 1959-1962 inclusive. There were several double winners of the Carter Trophy for Intermediates, but Kevin Rennell was the only one to achieve a triple. The Junior division for the McKenzie Tray produced a triple winner in C L Dunstan. Mark Tentori has won the Carter Trophy twice and the Dalgety Cup once.
There are few records available of the format of the Tai Tapu Mens Open tournament. It appears to have been a 36 hole event from its inception, but we cannot be sure of that. In the period 1971 to 1993 it seems to have been 36 holes although that is uncertain for several years in that period. In 1994 it was programmed for either 18 or 36 holes but it was back to 36 holes in 1995. 1996 marked the year that the event became 27 holes and it has remained that ever since. The solitary year 1999 had 36 holes programmed. The year 2005 was odd in that the programme was for 36 holes with an option for 18 holes. However the record shows the event was actually played over 27 holes.
For most of its history the Tai Tapu Mens’ Open was played on a Sunday. It was changed over to Saturdays from 1994.
The available data show that for the seasons 1963 to 1977, it was played as a Senior event on one day and a week or two later as a Junior event
